Baby Goat Horns - A Quick Question

Luna is 2 weeks old today. I have yet to see or feel any hint of horn buds on her head. I thought that they were supposed to show by now. Stuffin has horns....

Does this mean that Luna is naturally polled? (I don't know if her father was polled or not) How long could it take for horn buds to show up?

Her favorite game at the moment is to take running leaps at my arm, and to play "head butt" with my knuckles. She is just a laugh a minute! I promise new pictures soon, but I wanted to remember to ask the horn question while I was thinking of it.

OMG..how cute is she!! I remember when I got my guys as newborns and bottlefed them. They were so cute!
If you scroll down my blog you can see before and after. Soory I don't know about horns, I just let my guys grow them.

It took our little Allis several weeks before we could feel her horns, and then a few more weeks before they came out. So maybe she's just a little late?

Oh my, Luna must be defective. Just send her to me and I'll ignore her horrible deformities - hee hee. I don't know about horns, other than I have them and mine were just tiny little buds when I was two months old. Luna sure is cute! More photos please!
Goat kisses from Isobelle!

I have no experience with polled goats but I have heard that if the hair swirls where the horns should be then they will have horns, if they don't have the swirls then they are naturally polled.

We can see if this is true, maybe you could post a close-up picture of the area.

I'd heard the same thing that spinner heard. Does the hair swirl?

Sue was listed as polled on her papers but now at a little over a year old she's growing small scurs.

Another thought, can you shave a bit of fur off the top of her head and see them better??

Good question...

She just couldn't be any cuter if she tried. They can fool you with those horns! The gene for polled-ness is dominant so one of her parents would have to be polled, but since you don't know about her sire that doesn't really help you.

The swirls can usually tell you but not always! I was sure Lotus was polled. She had no swirls and her mother is polled. I kept checking her for nubs for the first couple of weeks but felt nothing and finally quit checking. We then noticed at 6 weeks that she had little horns growing. That's the only reason she wasn't disudded...she tricked us!

So....you may not know for a few more weeks whether Luna is polled or not. Most of the time you will be able to tell by a few days old, but some of them like to take their time.

My gosh she sure is cute! I'm anxious for kidding season. There is nothing cuter than a baby goat.
